Description
Wheatpark is a mid-19th century building with a significant addition made in 1882 by architect William Leiper. The earlier section, located to the right, is designed in a Tudor style and features two storeys with an attic, presenting an asymmetrical facade. It is constructed of stugged ashlar stone. The central entrance has a door (though the door piece is missing) with a single light window above it. To the right, there is a two-storey canted bay with a facetted roof that is hidden behind a parapet, which is linked by a ridge to the main roof. An iron finial, added by Leiper in 1882, adorns this section. To the left, there is an advanced bay that includes a single-storey canted and battlemented bay, with a mullion and transom window above, and a string course that rises to form a hoodmould, along with a single light in a shaped gable.
The Leiper addition showcases a Scottish Baronial style and is raised on a plinth. It features a large circular angle tower with a single bay on the right and a wide projecting bay with a porch to the north on the return elevation to the left. The windows vary, with either single lights that include a transom and relieving arch, or two to three light mullion and transom configurations. The tower is embellished with decorative quatrefoil and half-quatrefoil panels above the windows on the ground and first floors, and it has a corbelled parapet topped with a conical roof that includes a large gabled dormer and a finial at the apex. There is also a piended dormer to the right.
The gabled porch features elaborate timber tracery (though the door is now blocked) in the north bay. Above the porch, the first floor is corbelled out, with a central tripartite recessed panel. The gablehead has applied timber-framing, a small oriel window, and carved bargeboards. Additionally, there is a bas-relief panel depicting a lady playing a harp in a narrow recessed bay to the right of the porch. The building has a complex plan and a slate roof adorned with red ridge tiles.
