Description

Aros is a house dating from 1880, designed by William Leiper. It is a two-storey, gabled, asymmetrical building of rectangular plan. The construction is primarily whinstone rubble with polished red sandstone ashlar dressings, incorporating mock half-timbered details.

The south-east elevation, the main entrance front, features three asymmetrical bays. An advanced bargeboarded porch occupies the outer right, with a two-leaf, half-glazed door at its centre, flanked by windows with pierced quatrefoils above. The gablehead is finished with half-timbering. A full-height, canted bay is positioned to the left, also featuring half-timbering and a bargeboard; it contains a compartmentalised leaded window on the ground floor, with a tile-hung apron between the ground and upper windows. A tall, full-height stack is advanced immediately to the left of the bay, and a blank bay sits to the outer left. A recessed service entrance is on the outer left, along with a large dormer window with 12-pane sash and casement windows. A lean-to porch at ground level has exposed rafters, with a pointed arch doorway on the left and a blank space to the right. A transomed and mullioned leaded stair window is visible on the right return of the house, with a shouldered stack immediately to its left.

The south-west elevation exhibits a broad, bargeboarded, gabled bay on the outer right, featuring a full-height canted window and a tiled panel between the ground and upper windows. Half-timbering is jettied out on decorative wooden consoles supporting the first-floor window. A window is positioned off-centre to the left at ground level, with a round-headed ashlar division above the upper pane and a plate glass lower pane; a blank space is located at ground level to the outer left. A helm-roofed dormerhead is situated to the left, abutting a tall, shouldered stack with moulded arrises.

The north-west elevation presents three bays, with a single-storey block to the outer left. A full-height canted bay, with a bargeboarded gable, is positioned on the outer right. A window is off-centre to the left at ground level, with a leaded, bipartite window directly under the eaves. A gabled, half-timbered bay extends to the right, with a cat-slide to the left and a bipartite casement window; a single window is situated at ground level. A window is present in the single-storey block to the outer left.

The north-east elevation features a broad gabled bay with a bipartite window in the centre, a window to the left, and a window at the gablehead. A narrow window is set on the right return of the porch. The right return of the main house is recessed to the outer left.

The windows are a mix of plate glass and leaded casements, along with 12-pane sash and case dormer windows, and a stair window with coloured border glazing. The roof is covered in grey slate with a red tile ridge. Tall, full-height wallhead stacks are present, with paired wallhead stacks on the right return.

The interior comprises a plain pine enclosed stair, a timber picture rail, and timber fireplaces.
