Description
The Walled Garden at Aldonaig, located on Shore Road in Shandon, dates from the earlier to mid-19th century, with some additions made in the later 19th century. This two-storey house features an asymmetrical, gabled design with a rambling layout. The exterior is rendered and has chamfered golden sandstone margins, chamfered arrises, and quoin strips, along with projecting bracketed eaves.
On the south elevation, there is a three-bay gabled block that forms the main part of the house, with a single-storey advanced block to the outer right. The outer left has a broad advanced gable with a window to the right at the first floor. To the right, there is an M-gabled block with a ground-level door that is glazed and has a sandstone surround, along with a window in the gablehead at the first floor. The windows in the bay to the left are symmetrically arranged. The outer right features a single-storey advanced bay with a window at ground level and a small round-headed window in the gablehead.
The west elevation consists of four gabled bays. The broad bay on the outer left has windows at both the ground and first floors, while quoin strips separate it from the three symmetrical bays to the right. The central gabled bay includes a shield at the gablehead, with windows arranged symmetrically. The outer right bay is blank.
On the north elevation, there is an advanced gable to the outer right, featuring large windows at ground level and smaller windows at the first floor. To the left is a kitchen court, and the rear of the main house is asymmetrical with square dormers.
The east elevation has three bays, with a door and window on the outer left, a gently-bowed window in the centre, and two windows on the outer right. The bays are connected by symmetrically placed square-headed dormers.
The house features 12-pane sash and case windows, with 6-pane over 9-pane for the lower block on the south elevation and 8-pane over 12-pane for the west elevation. The dormers have leaded casement windows. The roof is made of grey slate and has coped and rendered ridge stacks with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
Adjacent to the garden is a single-storey outbuilding to the west, constructed of rubble with harl pointing and stugged red sandstone margins. It has a boarded door at ground level with a window to the left on the south elevation, and a hoist door at the centre. The eaves project under a gambrel roof, supported by sandstone corbels, with square dormerheads on the side elevations. The outbuilding features casement leaded windows and a grey slate roof.
The walled garden is enclosed by a high rubble wall with slab coping.
