Description

The stables and coachhouse at Ardenconnel House, located on Manse Brae in Rhu, date back to the late 18th century and have undergone modern additions and alterations for residential use. This single-storey and attic structure is designed in a U-shape and features white-painted harl with ashlar margins and dressings.

On the southeast elevation, there are seven nearly symmetrical bays. The entrance bay is slightly advanced at the center and features a broad, ashlar, round-headed carriage arch with a keystone and impost stones. The arch has a pediment that breaks the eaves, and its head is infilled with timber boarding. The three flanking bays include a block to the right with symmetrical outer bays, each containing a window at ground level and gabled dormer-headed windows. The middle bay is off-center to the right, featuring a door at ground level and a bipartite window directly under the eaves. To the left, there is a block with swept dormer-headed windows, a quadripartite window on the outer left, and a bipartite window on the right. Additionally, there is a bipartite window at ground level on the right, a modern door at the center, and a blocked carriage opening converted into a bipartite window on the outer left.

The west elevation presents seven asymmetrical bays with swept, bipartite, dormer-headed windows and doors at ground level, accompanied by steps and plain iron railings.

The courtyard elevation features an ashlar round-headed arch, with a bay to the outer left that has a swept dormer head and a window at ground level. There is a single-storey bay built in the re-entrant angle to the right, along with single-storey wings on both sides that include modern French doors and windows.

The building has modern multi-paned casement and top-hopper windows, a slate roof, and tall harled and coped wallhead stacks.
