Description
Lanark Memorial Hall, located on St Leonard Street in Lanark, was constructed with its foundation stone laid in 1925. This prominent three-storey, five-bay public building showcases an inter-war classical style. The exterior is finished in ashlar stone, which is channelled at the ground level. The three central bays are recessed and separated by heavy channelled piers at the ground floor, featuring a central door and doors in both outer projecting bays. Above the ground floor, there is a cornice and a band course. The three central bays have corniced windows with iron balconies, which are flanked by bulky pedestals, while the second floor contains three windows with decorative iron grills. The tall windows in the outer bays extend through the first and second floors and are accompanied by balconies supported on corbels. The main cornice features a large central parapet inscribed with the words "Lanark Memorial Hall," along with a cornice and stepped blocking course above. There is a low parapet with a shallow projecting pedimented central section over the outer bays.
Inside, the entrance features a pilastered Hall of Memory with a cornice and coffered ceiling. The main hall at the rear includes a large curved gallery, and there is a lesser hall on the first floor with a coved ceiling.
