Description
Dobbie Hall, located on Main Street in Larbert, was designed by A & W Black, Architects, Falkirk, and completed in 1901. This plain, six-bay deep hall features a stugged ashlar exterior and a piended slate roof, which is set behind an elaborate two-bay deep neo-Baroque front. The five-bay front elevation has advanced end bays, with the ground floor constructed of channelled ashlar, a deep ashlar base, a moulded cill course, and a cornice. The first floor is made of plain ashlar with a moulded cill course and rusticated quoins, which continue around the hall at the rear.
The central door is framed by an arched Gibbsian surround, flanked by Ionic pilasters and topped with a curved broken pediment. Above this, there is a tripartite window with a triangular pediment and an upper cartouche set between engaged Ionic columns, all surmounted by a large curved broken pediment at the wallhead. The deep bracketed main cornice and balustrade parapet complete the façade. All windows are two-pane sashes, with the outer ground floor bays featuring engaged pilasters in the reveals. The first-floor window bays are pedimented, with the outer bays adorned with cartouches and flat side pilasters, while the inner bays have lugged architraves.
Inside, the entrance hall includes cloakrooms on the ground floor, and there is a lesser hall on the first floor, all retaining original detailing and plasterwork. The main hall is supported by five Ionic columns at the curved end and features a U-shaped gallery with original seating and an elaborate neo-Baroque front. The lavish proscenium arch is decorated with engaged Corinthian columns and an upper initialled cartouche, while the ceiling is richly decorated with coffers.
