Description

Carronvale House in Larbert is an extensively remodelled country house built in 1897 by architect Sir John Burnet, incorporating the walls of an earlier 18th-century house with two wings added in the 1820s. This large two-storey house features neo-Georgian details and is arranged around a small internal court. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings and has a modern red felt tiled roof.

The entrance front is nearly symmetrical with five bays, featuring a central door that is pilastered and consoled, dating from 1897. Flanking the door are two windows with delicately carved consoled cornices from around 1820. There are two wider advanced wings with canted ground floor windows, center lights with curvilinear rails over casements, and bipartite windows above, along with an additional single-storey projection to the west. All other windows are sash and case with 15-pane glazing. To the east and west of the main front are set-back bays with elaborately pilastered and decorated ashlar first-floor facades. The west elevation includes a ground floor verandah, while the east side has a lower service court that has been altered.

Inside, the house features finely executed woodwork throughout. The main front rooms have stained glass panels depicting castles. The outer hall has a marble floor and a bold plain chimneypiece with a columned overmantel, along with a decorative Renaissance detail screen and internal porch. The panelled stair hall includes a stair with wine glass balusters and a coved ceiling on the upper landing supported by cherub consoles, with screens at either end of the landing and a stained glass Art Nouveau stair window. The Drawing Room features a marble chimneypiece with an overmantel incorporating cherubs and swags, a deep frieze, and a plaster panelled ceiling. The former Library has three French windows with coloured glass, a chimneypiece, and an overmantel, along with a coved ceiling. The Dining Room boasts an elaborate chimneypiece with timber details rising to a timber-joisted ceiling. The first-floor rooms maintain a simple but consistent detail, with two rooms amalgamated to the front of the house. The property also includes extensive walls that were formerly part of a walled garden and stable range to the north and east.
