The Orchard, 19 Auchingramont Road, Hamilton

The Orchard, located at 19 Auchingramont Road in Hamilton, is a large, two-storey asymmetrical late classical mansion built in 1864, with additions made in 1871. The main southeast elevation features four windows, with the left section projecting outward. This section includes a single-storey, four-light canted bay adorned with Doric pilastered angles at the corners and an open arcaded parapet. There is a pilastered porch in the re-entrant angle, featuring a keyblocked architraved doorpiece and an arcaded parapet similar to that of the bay. The right-hand ground floor windows are architraved and topped with consoled block pediments.

The northeast flank has two windows with similar architectural treatment, while the rear addition from 1871 consists of a two-window link to a block with a shallow rectangular bipartite bay. The southwest flank of the main block has three windows and a piended single-storey four-window range at the rear. The roof is low-pitched and piended, supported by wooden brackets, and features a truncated front with an ashlar cornice and rear stacks.

Inside, the mansion boasts a very ornate Renaissance interior with rich gilded plasterwork. The property is also surrounded by a rubble garden wall with rusticated ashlar gatepiers, and features garden terraces with pierced parapets and rusticated piers topped with ball finials.
