Description
Gilston House is a later 19th century, two-storey mansion featuring classical details and incorporating elements from an earlier house to the north. The building is constructed of polished ashlar, while the earlier fabric is harled. The symmetrical south front consists of five bays, with giant angle clasping pilasters. The central bay is slightly advanced, taller, and topped with a pediment. A round-headed carved oak door with a fanlight and sidelights is set behind an Ionic-columned and balustraded porch, with a Venetian window above.
The windows are adorned with apron panels in architraves that connect to the plinth at the ground level and to a string course at the first floor. The ground floor windows feature consoled pediments, and the building has pierced balustrades with terminal urns. The roof includes corniced stacks and a combination of piended and platform slate roofing. The east and west elevations are similarly detailed, each with three bays and tripartite windows in the outer bays.
