Description

Flakedale, located at 29 Wellhall Road in Hamilton, is a two-storey villa built around 1900 in the 'Glasgow style'. The building has a rectangular plan that is made into an L-shape by a lower two-storey service wing. It is constructed of red sandstone with bull-faced coursers and features ashlar dressings. The roof is made of slate and is swept to prominent eaves. There is a cill band at the first floor and a wallhead course, with eaves that include plate glass sash and case windows adorned with Art-Nouveau pattern stained glass in the upper sashes. The villa also has moulded and shouldered wallhead stacks that rise through the eaves, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The entrance elevation faces Hiltonbank Street, where the main part of the building is mostly plain, while a canted entrance porch is located to the left. This porch features a two-leaf door with a corniced lintel and a fanlight above, as well as sidelights and a swept polygonal roof. To the left, there is a multi-light angle turret topped with a finialled, round-topped conical roof, and a stair window on the left return elevation. The lower service bay is recessed to the left and contains two single windows and two bipartite windows.

The front elevation facing Wellhall Road showcases a full-height, four-light canted bay on the left and a tripartite window on both the ground and first floors to the right, along with various windows on the right return and service elevation.

The boundary wall consists of a coped bull-faced rubble wall along Hiltonbank Street and Wellhall Road.
