Description
This is a 1927 villa, built in the Glasgow style, located at 70 London Road, Kilmarnock. It is two and potentially three bays wide, and two storeys high. The principal facade is constructed of red Ballochmyle sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are of red brick.
The front (south) elevation features a pair of steps leading to a central entrance bay. This bay has angle pilasters framing a recessed arched door with a round, glazed upper panel and panelled lower section. A projecting, open, segmental pediment tops the door. Above the door, a bipartite window sits within the same recess. A stepped cornice is present, and a triangular gable with a blind arrow slit is at the gablehead. To the left is a two-storey, three-sided canted bay window with a single window on each floor; a cornice is present, broken above the central bay to resemble faux battlements. To the right is a lower bay with an open verandah on the ground floor, enclosed by a low stone wall at the front, and open to the left, adjoining the central entrance. This verandah has a door to the left, and a front-facing bipartite window under an overhanging roof. There is a flat-roofed bipartite dormer window to the first floor.
The west elevation has a shallow, half-gable to the right, with windows on both floors. A full-height, stepped stack projects from the centre, with a window to the left on the ground floor. A later brick extension adjoins the rear to the left.
The rear (north) elevation was not visible in 2001, but features a later, sympathetic red brick extension.
The east elevation has a half-gable to the left, with a rectangular, open verandah providing access on the ground floor, and a window to the right, complemented by a matching window to the first floor. A full-height, stepped stack projects from the centre. A later brick extension is to the right, with paired windows on the ground floor and a single window on the first floor.
The windows are timber sash and case, with multi-paned, leaded stained-glass floriate panels in the upper sashes on the front elevation, and plain glass in the lower sashes. The roof is piended and grey slate, with a lower, piended roof to the right bay. Terracotta ridge tiles are present, along with metal flashing and valleys. A flat-roofed timber dormer window is on the right. Cast-iron rainwater goods are painted. Short, red brick gablehead stacks project, with a band just below the neck; a single terracotta can is to the left stack, and paired terracotta cans to the right stack.
The interior was not inspected in 2001.
