Description

1 Walker Avenue in Kilmarnock is a Free Style villa built around 1895 by Gabriel Andrew. This two-storey, three-bay building features a rectangular shape and a prominent bay window with a canted gabled roof. To the left, there is a recessed single-storey porch. The main elevation is constructed from coursed droved red Ballochmyle ashlar, with rusticated red ashlar long and short quoins. The door surround, window sills, and bay window are made of dressed red ashlar, and there is a base course present. The eaves overhang with plain bargeboards adorns the gable ends.

On the principal elevation, the central entrance door is flanked by advanced plinths topped with ball finials and pilasters featuring winged angel capitals. Geometric brackets support an arched and corniced pediment above the door, which has an inner arched surround with alternate round and columned quoins. To the left of the entrance is a bipartite window, while to the right is a two-storey, three-sided, corniced canted bay window with a timber canted piended roof gable above. The first floor has a single window with a projecting sill in the central bay, and a bipartite bay with a projecting sill to the left. The eaves are blocked. The adjoining single-storey porch on the south elevation has a window to the right on the original elevation and an extension to the left with a higher window, along with a central door.

The north elevation features a gable end with a raised terrace at the ground floor. The rear elevation was not seen as of 2001. The building has replacement metal two-pane double-glazed windows, while the original timber panelled entrance door remains, along with a later faux panelled door to the porch. The roof is a shallow piended grey slate with metal ridging, flashings, and valleys. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with the principal gutter attached to blocked eaves. Red brick gablehead stacks with plain cans complete the exterior.

The boundary walls to the east are low red rock-faced ashlar walls with chamfered piended copes, complemented by plain wrought-iron railings featuring scrolled panels and floriate finials. The entrance to the southeast of the property includes a flanking drive with wing walls shaped like matching halves of a segmental pediment, made of red rock-faced ashlar with polished ashlar long and short quoins.
