Description

Gearholm House is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical villa located at 4 Abercromby Drive in Alloway, Ayr. The building features small recessed piended wings and is finished in painted render and harl. Notable architectural details include a base course, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, a cornice, strip quoins, painted window surrounds, and consoled cornices above the ground floor windows.

On the southeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a slightly advanced central bay with a double pilastered and corniced doorpiece. Above the doorpiece is a central blind arcade with a block pediment. The entrance features a timber door with a letterbox fanlight and narrow side-lights, along with a single window aligned above on the first floor and flanking single windows at both the ground and first floors.

The northeast elevation includes a single-storey wing on the right side of the ground floor, flanked to the left by a window, and a single off-centre window to the right on the first floor. The northwest elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a canted window that spans both the ground and first floors of the bay on the right, with irregular fenestration in the two flanking bays to the left. The southwest elevation has a modern addition that obscures the single-storey wing.

The building predominantly features lying-pane timber windows on the entrance elevation and is topped with a slate piend roof, complemented by brick and sandstone stacks with circular cans. The property also has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999. There are lean-to ancillary structures located to the northwest of the property. A high rubble boundary wall encloses the site at the rear of the property.
