Description
This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Built in the early 19th century, the cottages were part of a planned weaver’s village, primarily populated by Irish workers. They are mostly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storey in height. The cottages are predominantly constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.
The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows and some non-traditional replacements. They are covered by grey slate roofs, with gable and ridge stacks and some raised skews.
The row is notable for being a remarkably unaltered example of a weaver's village, as described in "The Buildings of Scotland" (2012). Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original arrangement where weavers' cottages would have accommodated two looms.
Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, constructed in 2004. The cottages significantly contribute to the streetscape and character of the village. Previously listed as Crosshill Village, Nos 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street.
