31 Dalhowan Street, Crosshill

This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street, Crosshill. The cottages date primarily from the early 19th century and were planned as part of a weaver’s village, with many weavers arriving from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and some are two-storey high. The cottages are built of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.

The windows vary; some are timber sash and case, while others are non-traditional replacements. They have grey slate roofs with gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews. The cottages retain much of their original external appearance and have relatively unaltered rooflines and window openings. Several cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original presence of two looms in what would have served as a weaving room.

Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The statutory address for the listed group of cottages is CROSSHILL VILLAGE, NOS 15-81 (ODD NOS) AND 85-91 (ODD NOS) DALHOWAN STREET.
