Description

This is a continuous range of cottages, primarily dating from the early 19th century, situated on the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storey in height. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised. The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows and some later replacements. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and the chimneys are gable or ridge stacks, with some raised skews.

The cottages form a particularly striking and unusual continuous row, retaining much of their original external appearance and adding significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, featuring two windows to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, a feature reflecting the original presence of two looms in the weaving room of each cottage.

Crosshill was planned as a weaver's village in the early 19th century, attracting weavers from Ireland. It is considered the least altered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was a later addition, constructed in 2004. The group value of these cottages is considerable, demonstrating an important example of planned industrial settlement.
