Description

This is a continuous row of mostly three-bay cottages, lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were constructed in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storey. The cottages are built of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some raised. The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows, as well as some more recent replacements. They have grey slate roofs and gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.

The row is remarkable for retaining much of its original external appearance, particularly its rooflines and window openings. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows to one side of the front door and one to the other; this reflects the original weaving rooms often containing two looms. The settlement of Crosshill is described in "The Buildings of Scotland" as the least altered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a more recent addition, constructed in 2004. The group value of the cottages is significant due to their contribution to the streetscape and character of the village.
