Description

This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. They were built in the early 19th century as part of the planned village, which was established for weavers, many of whom came from Ireland. The cottages are predominantly single storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two storeys high. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised.

The windows vary; some are timber sash and case windows, while others are non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and gable and ridge stacks are present, with some raised skews. A notable feature is the asymmetrical arrangement of several cottages, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original layout where weaving rooms were designed to accommodate two looms.

The cottages retain much of their original external appearance and contribute significantly to the streetscape and character of Crosshill, which Buildings of Scotland (2012) describes as being the least altered example of a weavers' village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was a later addition, constructed in 2004. The statutory address refers to numbers 15-81 and 85-91 (odd numbers only) of Dalhowan Street.
