33 Dalhowan Street, Crosshill

This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Dating largely from the early 19th century, they formed part of a planned weaver's village, with many workers coming from Ireland. The cottages are mostly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storey high. They are built of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised. The windows are varied, comprising timber sash and case windows and more recent replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised on skews.

The row is notable for its striking appearance and relatively unaltered external features, contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, displaying two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original layout where a weaving room would have contained two looms. Crosshill is regarded as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The original listing encompassed numbers 15 to 91 (odd numbers only) and has been updated to reflect the current address range.
