Description

This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages situated on the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages likely date to the early 19th century, when Crosshill was planned as a weaver’s village, with many weavers immigrating from Ireland. They are predominantly single-story, although some have dormers or attics and are two-stories in height. The cottages are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some have raised ground floors.

The windows vary, with some original timber sash and case windows and some non-traditional replacements. They feature grey slate roofs, with gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews. The cottages retain much of their original external appearance, including largely unaltered rooflines and window openings, and contribute significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. A distinctive feature is the asymmetrical arrangement of some cottages, where two windows appear on one side of the front door and one on the other, reflecting the presence of two looms in the original weaving room.

No. 83 Dalhowan Terrace was added as a later construction in 2004. The listing previously included numbers 15-91 (odd numbers only) of Dalhowan Street as "Crosshill Village".
