Description
This is a continuous range of cottages, mostly three bays wide, situated along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages date to the early 19th century and were constructed as part of a planned weaver’s village. They are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storeys high. The exterior walls are primarily painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.
The windows vary, some being timber sash and case, while others are non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews.
The cottages form a striking and unusual continuous row that retains much of its original exterior appearance and contributes significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, typically having two windows to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, reflecting that the original weaving rooms would have accommodated two looms.
Crosshill was planned in the early 19th century as a weaver's village, largely populated by immigrants from Ireland. It is considered the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was a later addition, constructed in 2004. The cottages were originally listed as Crosshill Village, Nos 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street. The statutory address now covers Nos 15-81 (odd numbers) and 85-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street.
