15 Dalhowan Street, Crosshill

This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Dating primarily from the early 19th century, the cottages were built as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are mostly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storey. The cottages are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised. The windows vary, comprising timber sash and case windows and some more recent replacements. They have grey slate roofs, with gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews. This striking, continuous row of small cottages retains much of its original external appearance and significantly contributes to the streetscape and character of the village, being noted for its unaltered rooflines and window openings. Several cottages are asymmetrical, displaying two windows to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, reflecting that the original weaving room in the cottage would have housed two looms. Crosshill is described in "The Buildings of Scotland" as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was a later addition, constructed in 2004.
