Description

This is a continuous row of mostly three-bay cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages date primarily from the early 19th century and were originally planned as a weaver's village, many of the weavers having come from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, though some have dormers or attics and are two-storeys high. The cottages are built of painted rubble with contrasting margins, with some raised.

The windows vary; some are timber sash and case, while others are more recent replacements. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.

The row is striking and unusual due to its continuous nature and the preservation of its original external appearance, adding significantly to the streetscape. Several of the cottages are asymmetrical, featuring two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, a feature reflecting the original weaving rooms which would have housed two looms. Crosshill is described in architectural surveys as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was constructed in 2004 and is a more recent addition. The original listing covered numbers 15 to 91 (odd numbers only).
