Description

This is a continuous range of cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Built primarily in the early 19th century, they form part of a planned weaver’s village with many residents coming from Ireland. The cottages are mostly single-storey, though some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storeys high. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised. The windows vary, with a mixture of timber sash and case windows and more recent replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, with gable and ridge stacks, and some raised skews.

The cottages are unusual for their continuous arrangement and retain much of their original appearance, adding significantly to the streetscape and character of the village; the rooflines and window openings are relatively unaltered. Some cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original layout where weaving rooms would have accommodated two looms.

Crosshill is described in "The Buildings of Scotland" as being the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The property was originally listed as Crosshill Village, numbers 15 to 91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street.
