Description
This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages date primarily from the early 19th century and were built as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are predominantly single storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storey. The construction is mostly painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some cottages are raised.
The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows, with some modern replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews.
The cottages are notable for their unusual continuous arrangement and their retention of much of their original external appearance, contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows positioned to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, reflecting the original weaving rooms which would have accommodated two looms.
Crosshill is considered in "The Buildings of Scotland" (2012) to be the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, constructed in 2004. Previously listed as Crosshill Village, Nos 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street.
