Description
This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. They were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many weavers coming from Ireland to work in the area. Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. The cottages are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and some are two-storey. They are constructed from painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some have raised margins. The windows vary, including timber sash and case windows, and some non-traditional replacements. They have grey slate roofs, with gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews. The row is remarkable for retaining much of its original external appearance, particularly the relatively unaltered rooflines and window openings. Several cottages are asymmetrical, featuring two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting that the original weaving room in the cottage would have had two looms. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a more recent addition, built in 2004. The group value of this range of cottages is significant to the streetscape and character of the village.
