Description

This is a continuous range of cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Primarily dating from the early 19th century, they were built as part of a planned weaver’s village, with many weavers coming from Ireland to work in the area. The cottages are predominantly single-story, although some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-story. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.

The windows are varied; some are timber sash and case windows, while others have been replaced with non-traditional windows. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews.

The row of cottages is remarkable for its relatively unaltered rooflines and window openings, and it significantly contributes to the streetscape and character of the village. Several cottages exhibit an asymmetrical design, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and only one on the other, reflecting the original purpose of the larger room as a weaving room accommodating two looms. Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire.

Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a more recent addition, built in 2004. The original listing covered numbers 15-91 (odd numbers only) and was updated in 2012.
