Description
This is a continuous range of cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are predominantly single storey, although some have dormers or attics, and a few are two storeys high. The cottages are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised. The windows vary; some are timber sash and case windows, while others have been replaced with non-traditional designs. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and the chimneys are gable or ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.
The row is remarkable for its striking appearance, relatively unaltered rooflines, and window openings, and it contributes significantly to the streetscape and overall character of Crosshill, which is described as the least altered example of a weavers’ village in Ayrshire. Some cottages are asymmetrical, featuring two windows to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, reflecting the original layout where weavers occupied the room with two windows and housed two looms. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The original listing, previously encompassing numbers 15-91 (odd numbers only), was updated in 2012.
