Description

This is a continuous row of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are considered the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire, as described in The Buildings of Scotland (2012). The cottages are mostly single storey, though some have dormers or attics and are two stories high. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised. The windows are varied, consisting of timber sash and case windows, and some non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and the chimneys are gable and ridge stacks, with some raised skews. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, featuring two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original use of the cottage’s weaving room, which would have housed two looms. No. 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The row contributes significantly to the streetscape and character of the village and retains much of its original external appearance, particularly regarding rooflines and window openings. The statutory address now includes numbers 15-81 (odd numbers) and 85-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street, previously listed as Crosshill Village, Nos 15-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street.
