Description
This is a continuous range of cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages date from the early 19th century when Crosshill was planned as a weaver’s village, with many weavers immigrating from Ireland. They are mainly single-storey, although some include dormers or attics and are two-storey in height. The cottages are principally constructed from painted rubble with contrasting margins and some are raised on a plinth.
The windows vary, with some original timber sash and case windows and newer, non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.
The row of cottages is notable for its continuous appearance, preserving much of its original external appearance and contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Several cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting that the original weaving rooms in the cottages would have accommodated two looms. Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. The statutory address is CROSSHILL VILLAGE, NOS 15-81 (ODD NOS) AND 85-91 (ODD NOS) DALHOWAN STREET.
