Description

This is a continuous range of cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Primarily dating to the early 19th century, the cottages are mostly single-storey, with some featuring dormers or attics, and a few extending to two storeys. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.

The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows alongside some newer replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.

The row forms a striking and unusual continuous grouping, retaining much of its original external appearance and contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Several cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original layout where weavers’ cottages would have housed two looms.

Crosshill was planned in the early 19th century as a weaver’s village, originally populated by people from Ireland. It is described in The Buildings of Scotland as the best-preserved example of a weavers' village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. Previously, the group was listed under the name “Crosshill Village, Nos 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street”.
