Description
This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Primarily dating to the early 19th century, they were built as part of a planned weaver’s village, with many residents arriving from Ireland. The cottages are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics and are two-storeys high. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised. The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows and later replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, with gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised and skewed.
The row is remarkable for its relatively unaltered rooflines and window openings, contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Several of the cottages have an asymmetrical appearance, with two windows positioned on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, a feature reflecting the original presence of two looms in the weaving room.
No. 83 Dalhowan Street is a more recent addition, constructed in 2004. The group value of this range is high due to its significance as a largely unaltered example of a weaver’s village in Ayrshire, as described in “The Buildings of Scotland” (2012). The statutory address now encompasses Nos. 15-81 and 85-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street.
