Description
This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, though some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storey. The cottages are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised, and are roofed with grey slates. They have gable and ridge stacks, with some raised skews.
The windows are varied, comprising timber sash and case windows and some more recent replacements. A significant feature of this range is that they retain much of their original appearance, with relatively unaltered rooflines and window openings. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical; for example, some have two windows to one side of the entrance door and one to the other, reflecting the original layout which included a weaving room with two looms.
Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, built in 2004. This group of cottages significantly contributes to the streetscape and character of the village. The statutory address relates to Nos 15-81 and 85-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street.
