Description
This is a continuous row of mostly three-bay cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver’s village, with many weavers coming from Ireland to work in the area. Crosshill is described as the least altered example of a weaver's village in Ayrshire. The majority of the cottages are single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storey. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised. The windows are varied, including timber sash and case windows, as well as some non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered with grey slates and feature gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews. The cottages retain much of their original external appearance, including their rooflines and window openings, and contribute significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Several cottages are asymmetrical, with a different number of windows on either side of the entrance door; this reflects the original layout, where the room with two windows would have housed two looms used for weaving. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a more recent addition, constructed in 2004. Originally listed as Crosshill Village, Numbers 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street, the listing was updated in 2012 to reflect the current address range of Numbers 15-81 (odd numbers) and 85-91 (odd numbers) Dalhowan Street.
