Description
This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages, lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the workers coming from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, though some have dormers or attics, and a few are two-storeys high. The cottages are constructed from painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised.
The windows vary; some are timber sash and case, while others are non-traditional replacements. They have grey slate roofs, with gable and ridge stacks and some raised skews. The cottages retain much of their original external appearance and add significantly to the streetscape and character of the village, with particularly unaltered rooflines and window openings. Several cottages have an asymmetrical facade, featuring two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original function of the cottage as a weaving room with two looms.
Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, constructed in 2004. The group value of the cottages lies in their representation of this relatively unaltered example of a weavers' village in Ayrshire.
