Description

This is a continuous range of cottages lining the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages were built in the early 19th century as part of a planned weaver's village, with many of the weavers coming from Ireland. They are mostly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics, and some are two-storey. The exterior walls are predominantly painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some are raised.

The windows vary, with some original timber sash and case windows and some more recent replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks, some of which are raised with skews.

The cottages retain much of their original external appearance and form a striking and unusual row, contributing significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting the original presence of two looms in the weaving room. The village is considered the least altered example of a weavers' village in Ayrshire and is described in detail in “The Buildings of Scotland.”

Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, constructed in 2004. The original listing encompassed numbers 15-91 (odd numbers only).
