Description
This is a continuous row of cottages dating from the early 19th century, forming the western side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. Originally planned as a weaver's village, with many weavers coming from Ireland, Crosshill is considered the best-preserved example of its type in Ayrshire. The cottages are predominantly single-storey, although some have dormers or attics to create additional space; a few are two-storey. They are constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins, and some have raised ground floors. The windows vary, including some timber sash and case windows, alongside more recent replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and some have raised skews to the gable and ridge stacks. The row is notable for retaining much of its original appearance, including the rooflines and window openings. Several cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other. This arrangement reflects the original intention that cottages would have housed two looms in what became the weaving room. Number 83 Dalhowan Terrace was added in 2004, while the rest of the terrace was previously listed as Crosshill Village, Nos. 15-91 (odd numbers only) Dalhowan Street.
