Description
This is a continuous range of mostly three-bay cottages along the west side of Dalhowan Street in Crosshill. The cottages date primarily from the early 19th century and were built as part of a planned weaver's village, drawing workers from Ireland. They are predominantly single-storey, though some have dormers or attics and are two-storeys high. The cottages are built of painted rubble with contrasting margins, some of which are raised. They have a variety of windows, including timber sash and case windows, alongside some non-traditional replacements. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and the chimneys are gable or ridge stacks, some of which are raised skews.
The row is notable for its original external appearance, particularly the unaltered rooflines and window openings, and adds significantly to the streetscape and character of the village. Many of the cottages are asymmetrical, with two windows on one side of the entrance door and one on the other, reflecting original arrangements where weavers had two looms in their workrooms.
Crosshill is recognised as the least altered example of a weavers’ village in Ayrshire. Number 83 Dalhowan Street is a later addition, constructed in 2004. The group value of the row stems from its well-preserved qualities and historical significance.
