Description
33-35 Sandgate in Ayr is a mid-19th century, three-storey and attic, five-bay Renaissance tenement. The building is painted and features a base course, a modillion cornice above the shopfront, a cill course on the second floor, an eaves course, a cornice, and a balustraded parapet with dies. The façade includes pilaster strip quoins and an arcade of round-arched windows on the first floor, with channelled pilasters at the springing line.
The northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a timber door with a letterbox fanlight to the outer right. There is a recessed central entrance to the shop on the ground floor, flanked by pilastered shop windows, and a multi-paned letterbox fanlight above. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, with the central window on the second floor being blind. The attic features two canted dormers.
The shop windows on the ground floor are multi-paned in the upper section. The first floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows with fanlights above the springing line. The second floor has plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the attic has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, with 2-pane windows on the canted sides. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a gablehead stack to the right, along with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
