Description
27-29 Sandgate in Ayr is a late 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories tall with an attic and features commercial premises on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar. Notable architectural details include a mutuled cornice above the shopfront, an ornamental frieze and dentilled cornice at the first floor, and balustraded aprons beneath the second-floor windows. The building has a mutuled cornice and a balustraded parapet adorned with dies and ornamental panels. Pilasters separate the bays at the first and second floors, except for the central bay at the first floor, which contains ornamental panels. The second floor features channelled detailing and roundels along the cornice frieze. The attic dormers have side scrolls and cartouches in their tympana.
On the northwest elevation, the entrance includes a timber door on the outer left with a multi-paned letterbox fanlight above it. To the left of this door is a recessed glazed timber door with a sidelight and another multi-paned letterbox fanlight. The right side features pilasters that separate two shop windows. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, while the attic contains two dormers.
The ground floor has modern shop windows, with the upper section being multi-paned. The first and second floors have plate glass timber sash and case windows, with the attic windows featuring two- and four-pane upper sashes. The roof is covered in grey slate and includes coped gablehead stacks, circular cans, and ornamental segmental-headed channelled stacks on the outer right and left, which rise from the balustrades.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
