Description
54-56 Smith Street in Ayr is a late 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories high with an attic and features eight bays arranged in groups of two. It is part of a terrace and has shops on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar. Notable architectural elements include a shopfront cornice, a cill course on the second floor, a cornice, and a parapet. Strip pilasters mark the grouped bays, and segmental stacks rise from the parapet between the second, third, sixth, and seventh bays, with a curved double-width stack at the center.
On the southeast elevation, there is a central doorpiece with a console and pediment, featuring a timber door and fanlight that extends through the parapet to a wallhead stack. The ground floor has a continuous shopfront on the outer left, with a two-leaf glazed timber entrance to the left and shop windows on both sides. There are three shops on the ground floor to the right, with a glazed timber door on the left and a shop window to the right of the inner shop. The central entrance is flanked by shop windows leading to the central shop, while the outer shop has boarding. The first and second floors feature tripartite windows in the outer bays, and a pedimented gable rises from the parapet with an opening within. The penultimate bays on the outer left and right have single windows, while the central bays contain two bipartite windows.
The building predominantly has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, gablehead and wallhead stacks, and circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
