Description

The Store on Freefield Road in Lerwick is a late 18th century to early 19th century building that was extended to the east in the earlier 19th century. It is a two-storey and loft structure with five bays and one storehouse. The walls are made of random rubble with droved ashlar dressings.

On the northeast elevation, there are five bays arranged in a 2-3 grouping, with windows that have been infilled, except for a vertically-boarded timber shutter with iron hinges located at the ground level in the outer right bay.

The west elevation features openings that centre on the gable, including a wide door at ground level and loading doors on the upper floors. The first-floor loading doors are segmental arched with two-leaf timber doors, while the loft space is infilled.

The south elevation also has five bays, arranged in a 3-2 grouping. In the left group, there are doors at ground level to the left of the left bay and in the centre bay, both with boarded timber infill. The right group includes a two-leaf vertically-boarded timber door at ground level in the right bay, and timber sash and case windows on the first floor, with a 12-pane window to the left and a 4-pane window to the right. Other windows are also boarded with timber infill.

The east elevation features a chamfered corner to the right at ground level, with openings roughly centring on the gable. There is a six-panel domestic timber door with a five-pane fanlight above at ground level, while the upper floor openings are infilled, and there is an additional small square window in the gablehead.

The roof is covered with modern corrugated sheet cladding.
