32-36 Market Square, Melrose

32-36 Market Square in Melrose is a late 18th century building that was largely remodeled around 1900. The elevation facing Market Place features two storeys and an attic, with three bays. It is harled and has ashlar dressings. There is a central door with a later 19th century shop-front to the right, and a similar shop-front was added to the left around 1900. The outer windows on the first floor were enlarged to bipartites. The lintel of the centre window, which has been reused, displays a date, and above it, a medieval roof-boss from Melrose Abbey was inserted when the wall-head was raised around 1900. The attic has three large cat-slide roofed dormers, and the roof is slated with brick end-stacks.

The elevation facing East Port combines at least two formerly separate properties and is four bays wide, also featuring two storeys and an attic, with a gable over the eastern bays, and is similarly harled.
