Description
The Ormiston Institute, located at 10 Market Square in Melrose, is a building from the later 19th century. It is two storeys high and features five bays, constructed from red sandstone with stugged ashlar and polished dressings. The centre doorpiece is consoled, and there is a door at the extreme right-hand bay. The building has chamfered angles at the openings, a moulded eaves-course, and a slated roof topped with a rectangular corniced end-stack. Notably, there is a large cast-iron clock on an ornamental bracket at the first floor, which was erected in 1892 in memory of John Meikle, a physician and surgeon.
