Description
The Corn Exchange, located at 12 Market Square in Melrose, was designed by David Cousin and built between 1862 and 1863 in the Scottish Jacobean style. This symmetrical building features three storeys and a five-bay front, constructed from coursed squared bull-faced rubble with polished ashlar dressings.
On the ground floor, there is a central shop door marked with the date 1863 and the initials DC. To the left of this door is another door, while the right side has a window, both adorned with elaborate strap-work crests. The first floor contains three closely spaced windows at the center, each topped with strap-work pediments and supported by a cast-iron balcony on corbels. The windows in the outer bays are framed by colonettes, also featuring similar pediments.
The upper floor is distinguished by a large crow-stepped gable at the center, which is corbelled out above the first-floor windows leading to the attic. The outer bays have gabled and finialled wall-head dormers. The crow-stepped skews are complemented by rectangular rendered stacks, and the building is topped with a slated roof.
