Heriot Bakery, 41 Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Heriot Bakery, located at 41 Grassmarket in Edinburgh, is a building designed by David Cousins in 1858. It is a two-storey and attic structure with four bays, featuring Jacobean architectural details. The exterior is made of coursed ashlar stone, which is squared and snecked at the rear. It has a base course and a stepped moulded string course just below the attic level. The windows are framed in roll-moulded surrounds, and there is a segmental-arched pend in the second bay from the left. The doors, also in roll-moulded surrounds, have cornices and strapwork pediments in the outer bays.

The second bay from the right has paired windows at both the ground and first floors, while the second bay from the left features paired windows at the first floor. There are small single windows in the outer left bay on both the first and second floors, which light the stair, as well as in a square turret above. The building has a steep pyramidal slated roof topped with a ball finial. On the outer right, there is a square bartizan with a small blind window and a finialled, leaded ogee roof. The gabled dormerheads at attic level break the eaves and are adorned with rose and thistle finials.

The windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane glazing, and the roof is covered in grey slates. The building features corniced ridge stacks with circular cans.
