Description

John Chesser, 1887, incorporating Alexander Black's 1883 primary school. Long single storey and basement (2-stories to rear) piend-roofed asymmetrical school block with Scots Renaissance and Jacobean details. Coursed sandstone. Parapet with loopholes. Buckle quoins. Regularly fenestrated; windows in moulded surrounds.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 10 bays to left, regularly fenestrated. Advanced 3-bay entrance block to right: square-plan entrance tower: 2-leaf timber door with arched plate glass fanlight in key-blocked round-arched opening, flanked by Doric pilasters on pedestals with open pediment containing strapwork decoration; raised parapet with carved decoration under cornice and inscription (SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL DEPARTMENTS, 1887) above, slightly recessed flanking bays with single windows and decorative parapet. 2 bays to right partly obscured by later additions.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Piended grey slate roof. Cast-iron down pipes with decorative hoppers.
