Science Block, George Heriot's School, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

The Science Block at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh was designed by John Chesser in 1887, incorporating elements from Alexander Black's 1883 primary school. This long, single-storey building with a basement (two storeys at the rear) features an asymmetrical piend roof and showcases Scots Renaissance and Jacobean architectural details. It is constructed from coursed sandstone and has a parapet with loopholes and buckle quoins. The building is regularly fenestrated, with windows set in moulded surrounds.

On the principal (south) elevation, there are ten bays on the left that are regularly fenestrated. To the right is an advanced three-bay entrance block featuring a square-plan entrance tower. This tower includes a two-leaf timber door topped by an arched plate glass fanlight within a key-blocked round-arched opening, flanked by Doric pilasters on pedestals. The entrance is adorned with an open pediment that contains strapwork decoration. Above the entrance, there is a raised parapet with carved decoration under a cornice, along with an inscription reading "SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL DEPARTMENTS, 1887." The slightly recessed flanking bays have single windows and decorative parapets. Two bays to the right are partly obscured by later additions.

The building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a piended grey slate roof, and cast-iron downpipes with decorative hoppers.
