Description

30 Grassmarket in Edinburgh is a four-storey, 13-bay double tenement building constructed around 1740 by builder James Lithgow. The building features restaurants on the ground floor, including The White Hart Inn. Its exterior is lime rendered with indented sandstone margins, while the rear is made of random rubble with polished sandstone dressings. The building has nepus gables with apex stacks located at bays 4 and 5 from the left and bays 3, 4, and 5 from the right. There are three piend-roofed dormers in the attic.

The right side of the building has a pilastraded shop front, and there is a stone-vaulted pend leading to Dunlop's Court in the fifth bay from the right. To the left, the entrance to The White Hart Inn features a two-leaf timber panelled door with a small-pane glazed fanlight above, set in an ornate doorpiece. This doorpiece includes an entablature supported by thistle-carved consoles and a swan-necked pediment that clasps an aedicule with a carved stag, flanked by obelisks. To the right of the entrance, there are four small-pane glazed windows, which are flanked by pilasters. There is also a small pend to the outer left that leads to a rear court.

On the northern rear elevation, there are two piend-roofed semi-octagonal stair towers and piend-roofed dormers in the attic. Above the ground floor, the building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, grey slates on the roof, stone skews, and corniced stacks with circular cans. The building was restored by Gray Marshall and Associates between 1994 and 1995.
