Description
The Corn Exchange, located at 29 Woodmarket in Kelso, was designed by Davis Cousin in 1856 and showcases English Elizabethan architectural style. This symmetrical building features two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay front and gables over the outer bays. At the center, there is a four-centred arched entrance topped with a square hoodmould. On either side of the entrance, there are tripartite mullioned windows. The first floor is highlighted by a five-light mullioned and transomed window in the center, flanked by crenellated oriel windows at the outer bays. The attic contains bipartite mullioned windows with latticed panes in the gables. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble with polished dressings, while the gables and the central wall-head parapet are rendered.
Inside, the Corn Exchange features a broad hall with a hammer-beam roof supported by corbels, and a gallery at the north end. The elevation facing Abbey Row includes a broad gablet with a centrally placed arched door and a five-light mullioned and transomed window above, all made of coursed squared rubble with polished dressings.
