Description
The Ship Inn, located at East Port in Melrose, is a pair of houses from the later 18th century that were altered in the mid-19th century to function as an inn. The building is rendered and stands two stories high with four bays. On the ground floor, there is a central round-arched door that has been inserted, along with a second door in the outer bay to the left. This door and the windows on both the ground and first floors feature chamfered margins. The east and west flank walls have skew putts, and there are large rectangular chimneys at the wall-head, indicating that the original wall-head gables were removed in the mid-19th century. These were replaced by a piended, slated roof that includes a pair of canted piended dormers.
